Read the straits times' coverage on V day and romance in Singapore and came across a couple of lines which i think best articulate my sentiments. Apparently they (the lines which i am about to quote) were made by a lecturer in SMU, pity that he isn't in USP. I guess it would be enlightening to study under him even if it was for 1 sem.
"mostly a hypocritcal, self righteous lot, prefering not to be honest, but delighting in other people's honesties"
"preoccupation with the day to day, material quest has snuffed out Singapore's romantic soul"
"...manila, where romance keeps the soul of even the poor alive and vital."
Not only have these lines aptly articulated my feelings, they also got me thinking whether, by signing a bond with MOE, i have indirectly and invariably sealed the fate of my romantic life. No, not that teachers have a poor prospect of finding life partners, but rather by pursuing a teaching carrer i have effectively grounded myself here in Singapore and in light of the currrent romantic situation, as enunciated by author of the above lines, i guess the chances of me finding my polaris are limited. It ironic that a decision which helped secured my aspiration implicit killed my other dream of finding someone who would run a marathon with me and watch the stars above. If you are wondering what polaris is, well its the name of a star, in this context, polaris serves as metaphor for my dream girl.If you were thinking that i chose polaris as my metephor in a rather arbitrary manner, there's a reason behind it. Polaris is the star that is located directly above the North Pole and in Singapore, polaris is visible only slightly above the horizon. With the bright lights and skyscrappers tainiting the night sky, finding polaris is Singapore is no doubt a feat. Now if you were to see the bright lights as being analogous to urbanization and the relentless quest for material wealth, then it would perhaps be apparent that when i say its hard finding my polaris in Singapore, i am really just reiterating the second quote.
